Create a Google Contact Group from a List or CSV File

Google updated Google Contacts last year. With last year’s update they “broke” the way we created contact groups easily. I did a write up (here) sharing a workaround. Google now released a way to create a contact group, and upload many contacts easily. YOu can create a group using a list (must be comma-separated) or a CSV file. Check out both ways below!

Create a Contact Group from a List of Email Addresses:
This is the fastest and probably the easiest way.
  1. Get all of your email accounts into a list. You can use a document or a spreadsheet (you don’t need headers in a spreadsheet).

  1. After each email address, you MUST have a comma.
    1. Document: Just have the list of addresses and add a comma at the end of each address.
    1. Spreadsheet: Make the cell to the right of each email address contain a comma.

  1. Copy this list. If you are using a spreadsheet make sure to copy both columns (email address and comma).

  1. Head over to contacts.google.com (or use the Google Waffle to click on the link).

  1. Click the “Create contact” button.

  1. Click on “Create multiple contacts”.

  1. Paste your copied list into the space for addresses.

  1. Select an existing Group or create a new Group.

  1. Click “Create”.

Create a Contact Group from a CSV File:
This is an easy way if you already have a list of Names and Addresses.
  1. Get all of your email accounts into a spreadsheet. Download this file to your computer as a CSV file.

  1. Head over to contacts.google.com (or use the Google Waffle to click on the link).

  1. Click the “Create contact” button.

  1. Click on “Create multiple contacts”.

  1. Click “Import Contacts”.

  1. Add or create a new Group and click on “Select file”.

  1. Select an existing Group or create a new Group.

  1. Click on “Import”.

Use these newly created groups in emails and Drive Sharing!

Create a Contact Group in Gmail

Gmail is a great tool. It is easy to use, stores conversations in ways that make sense, and is intuitive at finding contacts’ addresses. If you have sent, received, or created a contact it can show up by merely typing part of a recipient’s name in the “To” line while composing an email. Even better, creating email groups is easy. Below are the simple steps to do just this.

Create a Contact Group in Gmail

  1. Login to your Google account and go to your email.
  2. On any screen in Gmail click the word “Mail” in the top left corner.

  1. Click on “Contacts”.

  1. This is a list of all your contacts. If you are in a GAFE domain, you will also have access to every address in the domain. We will be using this to set up our groups.
  2. Look at the very bottom right. You may have to click “More”. Find “New Group…

  1. Click on “New Group...” and Name this new group (ex: Teachers, Students, or Parents). Click “Done”.

  1. Now find the group that you want to add contacts to on the left and click on it.
  2. Click on the image of the person with a + sign towards the center of the screen at the near the top.

  1. Start typing the name of your contact you want to add to this group. When you see the correct contact click on it. You can continue to add as many contacts as you need at this point to complete this group.

  1. Click “Add”.

  1. From here on out you can type the name of the group in the “To” line of an email (or in the share button in and Google Drive file) and the contacts in the group will receive the email.
