Multiple Chrome Profiles

One of the most overlooked (and often incorrectly done) features of Chrome is the use of multiple accounts. Often time users just sign out of the web page (ex: Google) and add more Google Accounts in the same Chrome browser. This often has issues (cross-account access, accidentally using the wrong account via another tab, and many others). The easiest (and safest) way to do this is to have multiple Google Profiles on your device. What does this mean? You will run multiple versions of Chrome…one for each account you have on your device. This will save you from being in the wrong account or even opening up your personal account to FOIA (Freedom Of Information Act). Yikes! Not to mention, it will keep your school bookmarks and passwords with your school account, and your personal bookmarks and passwords with your personal=account! Win-Win! The simple rule is this: Every Google Account needs its own version of Chrome. Below are the steps to get this set up correctly.

Setting Up Multiple Accounts:
You will want to set up a Profile for every Google Account you use on your device.
  1. Click the Profile Icon in the top right.

  1. Click “Manage People”.

  1. Click “Add Person”.

  1. Enter in your account info.
  2. Do this for each Google Account you want on your device

Switching Between Accounts:
This is easy to do and will keep you in the safe and clear!
  1. Click your account icon in the top corner.

  1. Click the account you want to use.

This will open a version of Chrome signed into that account, including all bookmarks, passwords, and access!

Guest Mode:
You can use Guest Mode to allow others to use your Chrome without having access to your account and not saving their data on your device!
  1. Click your account name in the top corner.

  1. Click “Open Guest Window”.

  1. Have them use this version of Chrome as they need to (sign in, access mail, etc…). When they are done just close this window and all their data is deleted!

Helpful Tip: Choose a different theme for each Chrome Profile to easily identify which account you are in!

Google Classroom Chrome Extension

Google Classroom is the Hot Tool right now. It is an awesome landing spot, sharing tool, and Drive organizer. The more I use it, the more I like it. The Chrome extension makes teachers’ lives even better. This extension does so much for both teachers and students. Check out what you can do with this simple little button that should be living next to your Chrome Omnibox!

Google Classroom Chrome Extension

First thing...Install the Chrome extension:
  • Search for “Google Classroom” in the Chrome Web Store and install in both teacher & student accounts. Click on the one that is called "Share to Google Classroom" made by Google.

Send websites directly to students:
  1. Go to a website you want your students to be at.
  2. Click on the Chrome extension.
  3. Choose the Classroom you wish to work with.

  1. Click on the top box and change it to “Push to students”.

  1. Click the blue “Push” button.

  1. Students will see a notification at the top and the site will load on their device!

Send website as an assignments directly to Classrooms:

  1. Go to a website you want your students to be assigned or get in an announcement.
  2. Click on the Chrome extension.
  3. Click on the top box and select either “Make announcement” or “Create assignment”.

  1. The extension then lets you add text to the assignment or announcement.
  2. Click the blue “Post” if it is an announcement or “Assign” if it is an assignment button.
  3. The link you were at is now an assignment or announcement within the Classroom you chose.

Students can send to the teacher as well:
  1. The student can go to a website they wish to share with the teacher.
  2. They click on the extension and see all Classrooms they are enrolled in.
  3. Choose the classroom and click on “Push to teacher”.

  1. The teacher will receive a notification in the top right side of their screen.

  1. They can then find the sent links in the “Received from students” section of the extension.

  1. If the teacher clicks they are directed to the sent link.

Experiment to see what you can do with the extension. You can do so much without ever actually opening the Classroom.

Google Chrome Tips and Tricks

I will admit it… I am a Chrome-aholic. I love Google Chrome! It is fast and does everything I want. It syncs across devices, saves my passwords, and offers awesome extensions. What is not to love about that. Go ahead and dig deeper into your new favorite browser, customize it, and make it perfect for you!

Google Chrome Tips and Tricks

Just a note.
Shortcut keys are shown in PC version. For all us Mac fans, substitute “Control” for “Command”:
PC: Control Key (Ctrl)
Mac: Command Key (Cmd)

Keyboard Shortcuts:
  • Ctrl+Shift+T Opens the last closed Tab
  • Ctrl+J – Go to downloads window
  • Ctrl+H – Go to history window
  • Ctrl+Tab – Navigate Tabs
  • Ctrl+U – View source code of the current page
  • Ctrl+K – To search quickly in the address bar
  • Ctrl+L – Highlights the URL in the address bar (use this to copy/paste the URL quickly)
  • Ctrl+N – Open a new Chrome browser window
  • Ctrl+Shift+N – Open a new incognito window (for private browsing)
  • Ctrl+Shift+B – Toggle bookmark display
  • Ctrl+W – Close the current Tab
  • Ctrl+Shift+D – Saves all open pages as bookmarks in a new folder
  • Alt+Left Arrow – Go to the previous page from your history
  • Alt+Right Arrow – Go to the next page from your history
  • Space bar – Scroll down the current web page
  • Shift+click a link – Opens the link in a new window
  • Alt+Home – Go to home page
  • Alt+F – Open the wrench menu (i.e chrome settings menu)
  • Ctrl+2 Opens the second tab open. Whatever tab you want to open, use that number

Basic Tips and Tricks:
  • Enable the “Home” icon () on the omnibar. Go to “Settings” and under “Appearance”, check “Show Home Button”.

  • Say “OK Google” to do an audio search from any Google search page. Go ahead, ask Google for the time!

  • Try “Incognito Mode”. It’s like the stealth mode of Chrome. When you are in this mode, Chrome doesn’t record your browsing history. Any cookies that are stored during the incognito mode are deleted when you close the browser. Open a new Incognito window from settings, or press Ctrl+Shift+N.

  • Need to let someone else use your computer but don’t want their searches/login info trapped in your Chrome? Try “Guest Mode”. It will let them log in, do their business, and not muck up your Chrome! Just left click your icon on the top right, click “Switch User”, and click on “Browse as Guest”. You are all set!

  • You can setup multiple profiles with your bookmarks, extensions, themes, and other settings. To do this, go to “Settings” and look for “Profiles”. Click “Add New User” and sign in. Here are the steps I wrote: Add Another Profile to Chrome

  • Click and drag tabs to rearrange their position to reorder how you want.

  • Drag a tab away to make it a separate window and stand out.

  • Click and hold the mouse on the back or forward button on any tab to see the history of that particular tab.

  • To zoom in or zoom out on a page (to increase font size) hold the Ctrl Key and scroll using mouse. Scrolling forward zooms in while scrolling backward zooms out. Ctrl+0 brings the page back to the default zoom level.

  • After downloading a file, you can copy it to the desktop or to any other folder by just  dragging it directly from Google Chrome’s downloads bar (bottom of screen).

  • Easily bookmark a page clicking the “Star” icon () on the right end of the Omnibar. You can also do this with the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl+D”.

  • Use the Omnibar as a calculator for basic calculation. Type a formula in like 34+16= and hit return.

  • Right click any tab and select “Pin Tab” to pin it. Chrome will remember the tabs you pinned and open them next time you open Chrome. Chrome will arrange pinned tabs to the extreme left of your Chrome windows. I pin Mail, Calendar, and Drive or any other pages I visit every time Chrome is open
